Why Rebuild?
Why should I rebuild my battery?
The main advantages of overhauling your bicycle battery
A battery rebuild means that all of the worn energy cells of your current eBike battery are replaced to ensure that the original capacity is again reached or even exceeded. The original housing and usually also the electronics of your battery are reused. There are various reasons why many owners of an electric bicycle choose to rebuild their bicycle battery.
Price difference with a new battery
The reuse of parts from the original battery leads to a large cost saving compared to the purchase of a new battery. Depending on the brand, the price difference per battery can range from $100 to $600+. The case, but also electronics of your current battery are still in good condition after a few years. While the battery has passed the maximum number of charge cycles after 3-5 years, other parts are less subject to wear.
You determine how far your battery will take you
A rebuild offers the possibility to choose a larger capacity and longer range per charge, without there being a significant cost increase in return. When purchasing a new battery, you often pay considerably more for an 'upgrade' to a more powerful battery, while it makes little difference to the cost to rebuild whether more (powerful) energy cells are to be installed in the case. For a small investment, you can thus significantly increase the range of your eBike.
Powerful energy cells with high energy density
An additional advantage of a rebuild is that the old energy cells can be replaced by more powerful cells of higher quality, also called grade-A cells. The quality of the energy cell has a major impact on the capacity and lifespan of a bicycle battery. For you as the end user, this means a greater range and many years of cycling pleasure.
Availability of older battery models
For many older eBike models, a (new) replacement battery is not available or difficult to source. If people still want to continue to use their eBike in that case, rebuild is the only option. In addition, it is often the case that older battery models that are offered as new have been in stock for years, so there is the risk that they have already lost a significant portion of their original capacity.
Sustainable choice
Finally, rebuild means a sustainable choice with the environment in mind. Reusing the old parts, such as the housing and electronics, reduces the burden on the environment. Many consumers find it a shame to throw away the old battery if most of the parts are still in good condition. The energy cells are recycled or repurposed into a lower demand application driving the circular economy. Metal components such as nickel and copper are easily recycled.
